Frequently Asked Questions

Fitting Experience

Do you need to see me without my shirt on?

While it does make the fitting easier, if you are uncomfortable with us seeing you in just a bra that is totally fine! We know just the right questions to ask to determine if your new size fits you even if you have a top on over it. We are all about consent and will never ask you to do anything you are uncomfortable with at any point during the process.

How do I communicate special circumstances to my fitter?

Each of our customers is unique and we are happy to tailor your fitting to make it the best possible experience for you! Don't like being touched? Don't like eye contact? Don't feel like chit-chatting? Would you like us to know your pronouns? Need a chair in your fitting room? Whatever it is, just let your fitter know at the beginning of your appointment or put it in the notes section when making your appointment! We don't need to know the reason if you don't feel like sharing. We are happy to accommodate :)

What should I wear to my fitting?

Wear anything you feel comfortable in! If you are looking for a bra for a particular outfit, we recommend bringing it with you. Otherwise, wear what you would normally wear on a day-to-day basis so you can see how your new bras will look under your clothes. Dresses aren't always the best choice, unless you are comfortable being seen in your underwear! We don't mind, but keep in mind your own comfort level. We also have some plain T-shirts available to try on over bras.

How long is a fitting?

Each appointment slot is an hour, and you can take as much or as little time as you'd like. Typically, our employees can help you figure out your size within a few minutes- then it's up to you how many items you want to try on! We usually say budget for at least 30 minutes, but it all depends on you.

What is a fitting like?
How much does a fitting cost?

Fittings are free! We want everyone to know their correct size and don't think you should have to pay for that, even if you don't find the perfect bra at our store. We are happy to give fit advice to anyone who wants it.

Should I tip my fitter?

Tips are not necessary! Writing a review about your experience and mentioning your fitter by name is the best way to let us know they did a great job. They will get the recognition they deserve, and a little bonus to boot!

Fit Information

How should a bra fit?

Check out this blog post for an in depth explanation on how a bra should fit

What's the right way to put on a bra?

There are many ways to correctly put on a bra, and there are some ways to avoid. Check out this blog post for more information!

How often should I be fit for a bra?

We recommend getting a fitting every time you go bra shopping! Even if your weight is the same, our bodies change all the time. If you don't want to do a fitting every time you shop (if you are a frequent shopper) we recommend getting a new fitting every 6 months to a year.

When should I be fit for a nursing bra?

We recommend coming in two weeks before your due date to get a wire-free nursing bra. This will get you through birth and the first few weeks to a month. Once your milk has come in and you are more knowledgeable about how your breasts fluctuate in size it is totally safe to wear a well-fitted nursing bra with an underwire! Our fitters are well versed in the issues that can come with wearing a nursing bra in the incorrect size and can help you find a comfortable and safe wired nursing bra.

How should a binder fit?
What is sister sizing?

Sister sizing is used to keep the same cup volume if the band size needs to change. For instance, if you are a 32FF but the bra runs tight and you need a bigger band you would choose a 34F to keep the same cup volume. If you go up in the band, you go down in the cup to keep the same cup volume.

Bra Issues

Why do my straps fall off my shoulders?

There can be many reasons why straps fall off your shoulders:

  • If you're wearing too big of a band the bra "thinks" you are wider around than you are. This means the straps are placed to fit on a wider body and can fall off if you are not actually that size.
  • If you have narrow shoulders, you may need to find bras with a "center pull" strap. This means the strap connects closer to the center of the cup as opposed to the outer edge. This keeps the straps closer to your neck and can help them stay up. You may also need a bra with a V-back, where the straps are connected right where the hook and eye hardware starts on either side of the band.
  • If you have sloping shoulders, you may need a bra with a J-hook or convertible straps in the back. A J-hook links the straps together in the back and keeps them up on your shoulders. A convertible bra has straps that can be unhooked and crisscrossed to keep the straps from falling down.
Why does my band ride up in the back?

Typically, if your band is riding up in the back your band is either too big or it has stretched out and it is time for a new bra. When you're wearing too big of a band there is no snugness to keep it parallel to the ground. This causes the band to ride up in the back and drop down in the front, negating any support the bra may be giving you.

Why do my straps dig into my shoulders?

First, try loosening the straps to make sure they are not too tight. If this does not solve the issue, you may be wearing too big of a band. The band should be doing around 80% of the "work" to keep you supported, and the straps should mainly be keeping the bra in place. If they are digging into your shoulders, it means the weight of your breast tissue isn't being supported by the band and it is all resting on your shoulders. Try sister sizing into a smaller band by going one band size smaller and one cup size larger.

Why does my bra leave red marks?

If a bra fits correctly it will be nice and snug around your body to support your breast tissue. If you have red marks after you take your bra off that is totally normal! They should go away pretty quickly after taking the bra off. If they don't, or if you are chafing or bruising, you may be in the incorrect size.

Why do wires always poke me?

There are a variety of reasons why your wires may poke you:

  • If you are wearing too small of a cup size the wires will sit on top of your breast tissue instead of going around it. This can cause the wires to feel like they are poking you. Don't forget- breast tissue goes all the way back to the armpit in many people, so your wire should too!
  • If you are wearing the wrong wire shape for your body, the wires will sit in the wrong place and poke you. Some brands make wires for people with a wider root and others for a narrower root.
  • If you are on the shorter side or have a short distance between the bottom of your breast tissue and your shoulder, you may be wearing a style with too tall of a wire. Try to find a style that has a lower wire in the armpit.
  • If you put your bra on by hooking it in the front and twisting it around, then flipping the wires upright. The flipping motion can cause the wires to bend causing them to poke into your body. Try putting the bra on with the wires facing up (like UU instead of ∩∩) then twisting it around to the front and pulling the bra up to your breasts.
Why do my wires always pop out?
  • If you are wearing too small of a cup size your breast tissue can place pressure on the wires and cause them to pop out.
  • If you are in too big of a band size your bra may move around a lot throughout the day causing it to break down quicker than it should.
  • If your bra ends up in the dryer (even once!) this can cause the wires to pop out. When a bra goes through the dryer the fabric that houses the wire may shrink, but the wire doesn't! This can cause the channel the wire sits in to become too small, and the wire can pop through the fabric.
Why does the band on my new bra feel so tight?

Think of new bras like new shoes- they need to be broken in! When you buy a bra, it is the tightest it will ever feel. Every time you wear the bra it will relax in the band and start forming to your body. Try wearing it for just a few hours at a time to start and work your way up to a full day. Also, try washing the bra. This can help soften some of the initial stiffness of the band. If it still feels unbearably tight after a few wears come back in and we can exchange it for a different size.

Do I really need an underwire?

Not necessarily! While underwires are what give a bra the power to lift and separate your breasts, many supportive wireless styles can still offer you good lift.

Bra Maintenance

How do I wash my bras?

Using the gentle or delicate cycle of your washing machine with cold water is perfectly fine, not all bras need to be hand washed. We recommend hooking the back of the bra and putting it in a lingerie bag. Then use a mild detergent that is designed for delicate fabrics to avoid damaging the bra. Always air dry it instead of using a dryer! You can hang it up or lay it flat to dry. If your bra is a molded cup, make sure the cups are not folded in any way.

How many bras should I own?

Ideally, having a bra for each day of the week would be fantastic! Practically though, having a minimum of two bras is a good call. This way, you can give the bra you recently wore a break for a day, which helps maintain the elasticity and prevent it from stretching out too quickly compared to daily wear. So - one to wear and one to rest is a great starting point. The more you add into the mix the longer they will last you!

It is also helpful to have some bras for special occasions, such as a Sports bra, Strapless, or a Wire-Free bra. Sports bras are specifically designed to be able to withstand rigorous movements and can wick moisture away from you, two things which could break down a regular bra more quickly.

How often can I wear a bra?

It is best to let a bra rest for a day after wearing it. This keeps the elastic in the bra from stretching out too quickly.

How long should a bra last?

This depends on how many bras you have and how often you wear them. If you only have one bra that you wear every day it may only last 3-6 months. Adding more into the rotation will greatly improve the life of your bras. If you have three in rotation they should last at least a year before becoming completely stretched out.

How do I know when it’s time for a new bra?

There are many signs that your bra has fulfilled its duty and it’s time for it to retire:

  • If the band is starting to ride up in the back and you are on the tightest row of hooks
  • If you are feeling a lot of weight on your shoulders and the band is no longer supporting the weight of your breasts
  • If you’re starting to fall out the bottom of the bra
  • If you’re experiencing upper back pain
  • Signs of fraying, stretched-out fabric, or underwire poking through.

Store Questions

Who is welcome at The Pencil Test?

We welcome every human, regardless of age, gender identity, ethnicity, religion, disability, sexual orientation, body size, education, or national origin. We are a fun and inclusive shop and strive to make it a safe space for everyone in every body! We are an LGBTQIA+ safe store.

Do I need an appointment to come in or shop?

We recommend making an appointment if you would like to use a fitting room or have the assistance of an employee. Appointments do take priority over walk-ins, so if you are going to come in without an appointment come with some patience as you may have to wait a bit for a fitting room or assistance.

We gladly take walk-ins at both locations when we have the available space. In Portland we reserve two fitting rooms for appointments and have three more for walk-ins. In Renton we have two rooms for appointments and two for walk-ins. If you don't need a fitting room or just want to browse please stop by, we'd love to see you!

How do I make a return or exchange?

You can stop by either store to do a return or an exchange. If you would like to try more items on to make an exchange you may have to wait for a fitting room if you don't have an appointment. Please see our return policy for more information.

I booked an appointment, but I need help finding a confirmation e-mail.

The confirmation emails for appointments often end up in the spam folder. If you use Gmail, they often end up in the "Promotions" folder. The email will be from Setmore, our booking system. If you still can't find it, you can call the store you booked the appointment at to confirm.

How do I cancel or reschedule my appointment?

You can cancel or reschedule your appointment from the “Reschedule” button in the confirmation email you received when you booked your appointment. If you are unable to find that email (please check your spam!) you can give us a call and we can cancel it for you. To reschedule without the confirmation email, it is easiest for us to cancel your appointment and for you to go back onto the booking page and make a new one.

Are your shops ADA-accessible?

Yes! Both stores are ADA-accessible. Renton has street parking, and Portland has a small parking lot. The Portland parking lot has a step down in front of the store, however can be accessed without using a step via the sidewalk on MLK Blvd.

Why don't you carry smaller cup sizes?

We start at a D-cup and go up from there. A, B, and C cups are more generally available in most bra stores and while we recognize bra shopping can still be difficult for those cup sizes, we are a Full-Bust specialty bra shop.

Are you a plus size store?

While we do carry band sizes that could be considered "plus size" we are primarily a "full bust" store. These two things can co-exist, but are not the same thing. Plus-size generally means (in the bra world) a larger band size. Full-bust means a larger cup size. We cater more to larger cup sizes than larger band sizes. We carry band sizes from 28-48, and cup sizes from D-K (UK) or D-O (US)

Online Orders

How do I edit my order?

Orders are filled in-store during business hours by our employees. If you need to make edits to your order you can call either location during business hours and an employee can assist you in doing so.

Why can't I pick up the item I want at the location I want?

All the inventory on our website is housed at either our Portland location or our Renton location. Some items are only available at one location and will have to be shipped if it is not your local store.

Why did I only receive part of my order?

Our online inventory is located in both our Portland store as well as our Renton store. If your order contains items that are in stock at different locations, they will come in separate packages. You should receive two different tracking numbers.

How long will it take to get my order?

As a small business with limited employees, we don't get to the post office more than one or two times a week. If it has been more than two weeks since you placed your order, please give us a call to check on the status. We do not offer expedited shipping.

The items I ordered don't fit. Can I return them?

Please see our return policy for information on returns and exchanges.

I'm not sure I'm ordering the correct sizes; how do I get help with that?

Check out this blog post explaining the different sizing systems on our website. You can also call either store or email us to ask questions about sizing and what to order.

When we fulfill orders, we make sure the items make sense together, and will contact you if we think something may be off (such as ordering a UK H-cup and a US H-cup in the same order.) Please make sure you provide a good phone number and e-mail address in case we have questions about your order.
