What is Sister Sizing, and When Is It Appropriate?

Finding the right bra size can be a challenging task! Often, we are told we are a certain bra size, but not every bra fits quite right in that size. Like jeans, every bra fits differently, even if they have the same size written on their tag! This is where the concept of sister sizing comes into play.

What is Sister Sizing?

Sister sizing is a technique used in the world of lingerie to find alternative bra sizes that have the same cup volume but different band sizes. In simpler terms, it helps you know what cup to choose if what you are trying on is too tight or too loose in the band. The key to sister sizing lies in understanding the relationship between band and cup sizes.

Understanding Band and Cup Sizes

Before delving into sister sizing, it's crucial to grasp the basics of bra sizing. Bra sizes are comprised of two components: the band size (number) and the cup size (letter). The band size is the measurement around your ribcage, just beneath the bust. The cup size indicates the volume of the breast. However, the letter of the cup size is not universal across band sizes. For example, if you are a 34FF, but need a larger band, a 36FF would be one band size and one cup size larger than the 34FF. This is where sister sizing comes in!

Check out the chart below! Find your bra size and follow the row to the left or the right to find your sister sizes.

How to Sister Size

up in the band, down in the cup

Imagine this: you've found the perfect bra! It ticks all the boxes and the cups fit like a dream. However, there's a slight hiccup—the band is uncomfortably tight, making it difficult to breathe deeply. If you're looking to keep the same fit in the cups but want a roomier band, you'll need to adjust the cup size accordingly.

Let's consider a specific scenario: if your perfect fit is a 34FF, and you want a looser band without changing the cup volume, you would consult the sizing chart and select a 36F instead. This adjustment ensures you keep the cups exactly the same while getting some more room in the band.

down in the band, up in the cup

Conversely, if the band feels too loose, but the cups are great, follow the chart to the left. Continuing the example above, a 34FF would choose a 32G to keep the same cup volume but get a tighter band.

Maintaining Cup Volume

The key is to keep the cup volume constant when sister sizing. As you adjust the band size, compensate by choosing the cup size that complements the change in the band.

When to Use Sister Sizing

In-between sizes

Sometimes, you may fall between two standard sizes. Instead of settling for a less-than-ideal fit, consider trying on sister sizes to identify the combination that offers the most comfort and support.

The band doesn’t fit correctly

If the band is riding up in the back it may be too big around and you should choose a smaller band size and larger cup size by moving left on the chart. Alternatively, if you can barely get the band hooked you should choose a larger band size and a smaller cup size by moving right on the chart.

Size variations between brands and styles:

Every brand has its own unique fit, and sometimes even within one brand different styles may fit tighter or looser! Sister sizing is a common tool to use when trying bras on to find the perfect fit. Always start with your true size and adjust as needed. If you find a bra with the perfect fit in the band, but the cups are too large or too small, follow the chart vertically to adjust cup size.
